I'm fortunate that I own my own business in partnership with my brother and can be home part-time while my kids are young, but Charles is in full-time preschool. I crave an identity beyond being a mom, and I think I am a better mom for being able to contribute my brainpower at the office (not to mention feel good about my financial contribution to my family). What I don't understand is why anyone would pity me this decision or try to make me feel guilty (and people do). I LIKE it this way.

Good for you for enjoying work and feeling good about working! Some of the great benefits (beyond money) include: things to talk about with your spouse that aren't diapers/feeding schedules/other kid stuff, friends who aren't just your kids' friends' mothers, children who learn that there are other adults besides just mommy and daddy who love them and who will care for them, well-socialized kids who don't have to overcome some of the extreme shyness/sharing/communicating problems that other kids sometimes have to overcome, usually (if you go to a daycare) a professional childcare specialist who can give you advice on development and raising your kids.

These are good things! My housecleaning and cooking has suffered because I choose to spend the time I am home with my kids, but otherwise, I'm all for working!

And, Julia, Eleanor is so beautiful!Ameliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05818287674488893761noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655528341514770370.post-76722379138874080172011-09-12T17:38:56.810-07:002011-09-12T17:38:56.810-07:00I'm so happy for you, Julia! Can you believe we were in our first week of college when the twin towers were hit? I remember the news being shown in the big lecture hall of Olin Hall.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03911776183563612742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8655528341514770370.post-65772424663809973462011-09-11T09:59:01.046-07:002011-09-11T09:59:01.046-07:00as i lie here sleeping with kity-kat, let me just ...as i lie here sleeping with kity-kat, let me just say that i love you too mom!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
